The Flood Fill Tool - 1 Flood Fill Tool button

The next tool we are looking at is the Flood Fill Tool. You can have a lot of fun with this. Again, you will need a graphic open before you can access this tool.

I suggest you just open a new graphic so you can play around a bit as we go. Make it about 400 x 300 pixels, any color background.

Now, click on the Paint Can icon in the Tool Bar to see this tool box. If you don't see it, then press the keyboard letter O to open the Tool Options Window.

Tool Options - Flood Fill [ color panel ]

When you attempt to flood fill a graphic or a selection with no styles selected in the color panel you will get this warning message:

To select a foreground style, click on the small arrow in the top style box. The choices are from left to right:

  • Solid color fill
  • Gradient fill
  • Pattern fill
  • None (null)

Once you have selected a style, clicking in the style box will bring up the appropriate style editor - the color picker for a solid fill, a gradient choice and editor for the gradient fill, a pattern choice for the pattern fill. The style box will indicate the choice. Click on the Gradient Fill.

This will bring up the Gradient Select window:

On the left is the chosen gradient - yours might be different. Click on the arrow beside the gradient display window to bring up this window where you can choose a saved gradient:

Select the Red-Yellow-... for the moment so you will be using the same one as we are here. Back to the Gradient Select window above you will see two numbers available - Angle and Repeat, and an indicator on the gradient. The indicator displays the angle that the gradient will appear in your graphic. You can adjust the angle by changing the number in the Angle window, or draging the indicator around with your mouse.

The Repeats is simply the number of times the gradient repeats across your graphic. Whichever gradient you choose will be displayed in the styles button on the color panel. You can set a fill style for both the foreground (left mouse button) and the background (right mouse button) completely independant of each other.

In this case, a red/yellow gradient is selected for the foreground fill, and a solid color for the background fill.

You have 4 different gradient styles to choose from - Linear, Rectangular, Sunburst and Radial.

The Edit Paths button is for organizing the location on your hard drive where the gradients are kept. Don't change anything here for now.

When you have experimented a bit with the basic gradient fill, we will have a look at creating your own gradients.
